Using Thrift Store Handbags to Decorate Teen Girls Bedrooms

Here is a bedroom decorating idea that your teen daughter will love! What girl over the age of 13 doesn't love handbags? This decorating idea will be a hit with everyone. It is unique and it will solve your daughter's storage problems at the same time.

Choose a section of wall space in her room and paint it a co-ordinating color to match her decor. This will form the backdrop for her eclectic handbag collection. If you want it to really look like "art" you can frame the area by attaching molding to the wall or artfully do some block painting. Mount coat hooks randomly around the framed area. Paint them the same color as the wall so they will blend in or leave them as is if they are decorative.

Now comes the fun part. You get to go shopping! You can find funky handbags and totes very cheaply at thrift stores and dollar stores. It should not cost much more than $20 for a selection of 10-20 handbags. Choose a variety of sizes from little clutch bags to large roomy totes in bright colors and interesting textures.
Hang the purses in a pleasing arrangement on the hooks.

Now your daughter has all the storage space she needs for her accessories, CDs, cosmetics, magazines, etc. PLUS she has a great supply of handbags to use anytime she wants. Maybe if you are lucky she will let you borrow them too!

Decorating for Teens- When your teen wants to paint the room black!

When you ask your teen for bedroom decorating ideas for their room you may be in for a shock. If you have teens you know what I am talking about! At some point in almost every teen's life they go through a phase of wanting a black bedroom. First off...don't worry. You don't need to pack them off to a psychiatrist for analysis. This is a perfectly normal phase. But it doesn't make decorating their room an easy task unless you also happen to love black walls!
I had two teens, a boy and a girl, who both at one time requested a black bedroom. I used the same approach with them both and got two very different results but they each ended up with a room they loved, it was truly their own and, NO, I did not paint the walls black! For my daughter we went with white walls so she could create a dramatic effect and my son's room was painted a warm, neutral gray. It is the accessories where I gave them free reign to express their style and individualism.
Teens generally approach life with great passion. What they are into..they are REALLY into. For my daughter it was punk music, art and fashion. For my son it was guitars and heavy metal. Both wanted to plaster the walls with posters. Here are a few alternatives to having them tape your walls up with pictures.
  • Poster frames are a must for any teen bedroom. Have one or two on the wall and your teen can display their favorite poster of the day/week/month without putting tape or thumbtacks into the wall!

  • CD frames. This is a very cool way to turn your teenager's CD collection into wall art. There is space for 20 CDs in the frame, it keeps them organized AND your teen can switch them up as their taste in music changes.

Instead of a headboard I let them be creative. Here are a few ideas I came up with that kept us all happy.
  • If your teen is artistic, get a prepared artist canvas approximately 40" x 24" and a set of acrylic paints and let them paint their own headboard, in their own style.
  • Replace your teen's headboard with a black chalkboard or cork board so they can decorate it at will.
  • This is the one my kids chose. Have a piece of plywood cut to 40" x 24", or whatever size you want the headboard to be, and paint it flat black. Then have your teens pull out their stash of teen/music magazines. Give them scissors and a bottle of podge or white glue and let them decoupage their headboard.

Next you can purchase photo boxes, trinket boxes or use shoe boxes and let them loose on those as well. They can customize them with paint or decoupage and since storage is always an issue in kid's bedrooms these accessories can be put to good use.

For that touch of "black" that they seemed to crave, I purchased some very inexpensive black poly/cotton fabric and made curtain panels and bed skirts. That was enough to satisfy them without painting the entire room black. With these simple bedroom decorating ideas both you AND your teen will be happy!

Decorating Kid's Rooms With Thrift Store Finds

You can give your children the room of their dreams with some simple bedroom decorating ideas that you can find at thrift stores. First determine what your child really wants. Do you want to go with a theme of their favorite cartoon character or a sport they love? Whatever you decide the biggest mistake you can do is to purchase a comforter with the cartoon character on it. Remember that your little darling is growing and her/his interests change with every birthday. Unless you want to purchase a new comforter on a yearly basis you should keep this to a very neutral color. I know that most mothers shudder at the thought of putting white in a child's room, but solid white, tan, grey, blue and pink are your best bets.
If you have already bought a comforter that your child has out-grown or gotten tired of there is a very inexpensive quick fix! Use the old comforter as a duvet and make a cover to slip over it.
One of the first places I head to in a thrift store is the bedding section. Not because I need new sheets but because bedding can provide you with ample fabrics to make decorator items from. This is especially true for children's rooms. Because a child's interests change so often you will find awesome character sheet sets in thrift stores. So if your princess decides that this year she would like a Dora the Explorer bedroom start browsing through thrift shops because another little girl will have decided that Dora is no longer her dream because Barbie is now the coolest item in her toy box. Most people send their children's used, but not abused, bedding to the thrift store. Remember you are not going to use these sheets for sleeping on. They will be the source for all of your decorative items in the room.
Once you have the character sheets start looking for other sheets with the same color schemes in various patterns. It may take a few trips to a few thrift stores over the course of a few weeks or a month but you are going to be sewing up your finds in the meantime. Look for stripes, patterns, polka dots all with at least one or two of the same colors of the character sheets in them.
Use these sheets to make curtains, bed skirts or dust ruffles, throw pillows, chair pads and slip covers, dresser scarves, organizers, basket liners, etc. Most of the character sheet sets have pillow cases with large characters on them. One of the best things to do with these are to create artwork for the walls. Use a canvas stretcher frame you can pick up at any art store. Center the fabric over the frame and stretch it tight using a stapler to fasten it on the back of the frame. Now either put the artwork in a picture frame you found at the thrift store or just hot glue some ribbon around the outer edge to give it a finished look.
Have fun with pillows. These are items that cost very little but can add a lot of pizazz to the room.

These animal pillows are an excellent example of using various patterns and colors to coordinate decorator items for your child's room. They create fun and interest, they are very inexpensive to make and your child can even play with them.
Many thrift stores also have a fabric section. Here you can pick up scrap pieces of fabric to add to the mix. Also keep your eye out for trim and lace. Many people clean out closets and sewing rooms and their unused craft supplies will end up in the thrift store. These finds are awesome because the price of trim at fabric stores can really add up.
I hope you have enjoyed my article. Have fun being creative! Be sure to browse through my blog for even more bedroom decorating ideas.
